They can also lead to dangerous situations, including fire hazards from bypassed electrics, structural damage to properties, and environmental issues. Additionally, properties used for illegal grows are frequently targeted by criminals, increasing the risk of violence and burglary.

Recognising the signs

Illegal cannabis cultivation operations are often hidden inside rented homes, warehouses, or even unsuspecting residential buildings. Here are some common signs to look out for:

Strong, persistent smells – Cannabis plants have a distinct, skunky smell that can be overpowering. This smell can linger in the air.

Windows covered or permanently blocked – Grows often have obstructed windows to prevent visibility inside of the addresses.

Excessive condensation on windows – High humidity inside grows causes water to condense on windows.

Frequent visitors at odd hours – Unusual foot traffic, especially late at night, could be a warning sign. This includes people bringing boxes and pots inside of properties.

Unusual ventilation setups – Large ducts or fans installed in unexpected places may indicate indoor growing.
